Welcome New Dukies!

Hey prospective Dukies! Welcome to campus! I know that right now is a pretty tough time in your life, what with every school trying to draw you in and college visits at a peak, but please do consider what we have to offer.

I am sure that the various tours you have been on have shown you all of what Duke academics and Duke social life have to offer you. But Duke can do a lot for you spiritually, too. Since this is the MSA website, I will take a minute to share what our MSA can do for you:

- Be your family

- As in feed you

- Provide a place (Center for Muslim Life) to have meetings/pray/play video games/watch basketball

- Take you on retreats where you achieve a high (on spirituality)

- Help you explore your religion

- Give you religious/spiritual support

- Provide a great chaplain, our very own Turkish Delight (Imam Abdullah Antepli)

and so on and so forth. We do a lot of fun things together and hope that if you decide to come to Duke, you will want to be a part of our community as well. If you are on campus during the next few weeks, please email one of us, or just drop by the Center for Muslim Life to talk to one of us (there is usually someone there.) We are very excited to host you all on campus during these lovely spring months and hope that you make the final leap of faith and stay with us come August.

Love,                                                                                                                                                                                              Duke MSA

Welcome!

As-Salamu Alaykum (Arabic: السلام عليكم )

Peace be upon you all

Welcome to DukeMSA.org. I hope this website will familiarize you with everything you need to know about being a Muslim at Duke. If not, you can always shoot an e-mail to one of MSA's executive board members (found in About MSA). After you have checked out our MSA and subscribed to our listserv, be sure to check out the information under Muslim Life at Duke, especially the Center for Muslim Life (CML), which is the only dedicated building for Muslims on any American university campus. Duke is also unique having its very own Muslim chaplain, Abdullah Antepli. While these blessings play a large role in facilitating Muslim involvement on Duke's campus, they are in no way reserved just for Muslims and should be seen as valuable resources for the entire Duke community. That being said, feel free to take a look around our website and do not hesitate to forward any of your questions or concerns here.

Be a panelist for event on Muslim women at Duke!

LADIES:
For Islamic Awareness Week, we’re doing an event on women and Islam (brief description below). We’re looking for panelists/ artists and we would love for YOU to participate! All you’d need to do is briefly answer the following two questions by Monday, February 26th @ 5 pm!

- Why are you interested in participating in this event?
- What do you think you could contribute to the event broadly and specifically to the role of panelist/artist?

Also, please clearly indicate your role preference (panelist or speaker) and if you’re open to being considered for both.

We’re looking for diversity of opinion and experience so please consider applying regardless of how active you’ve been in MSA or women’s issues on campus, previously! This could be a great event and we want all of you to be heard!

Event description:

We're aiming for "convo-logues," conversation interspersed with and guided by monologues that speak to the varied experiences of being a Muslim woman on campus. With this format, we're hoping to touch simultaneously on issues that resonate with Muslim women on campus and women in general. After each of four-five monologues, we will turn to a panel of Muslim women who will then offer their personal insights on the topics in the monologue. Then, repeat. Our goal is to truly encapsulate the diversity of experience and opinion that women on campus embody with regard to Islam. This is all about painting a multi-dimensional portrait of women and Islam and showcasing the genuine triumphs and struggles they face. It's about having open and honest as well as focused and guided conversations. In addition to four-five monologues, we will have up to seven panelists, and two facilitators (Saadia and Abdullah.)
