Islam Awareness Week PDF Print E-mail

The theme is to explore issues surrounding "Self and Society." Events will include:

 

Tues, 3/26, 7 pm, Divinity School Basement 0016: "Leggo my Ego: Self-Interest within Society"

 

The Prophet Muhammad, Peace Be Upon Him, says controlling the nafs ("ego") is the best form of Jihad ("struggle"). But how do we control our ego when we interact with society? How do we make rational decisions that increase our happiness without compromising the happiness of others?

Aatif Abdul-Qadeer, Youth Director for the Islamic Association of Raleigh, will be speaking on this topic and

dinner will be served iA.

 

Wed, 3/27, 8 pm, Gray 228:

Calligraphy Night

 

Join Professor Muhammad Habib for an exciting and interactive lesson on how to compose Arabic Calligraphy. Cookies and drinks will be served iA.

 

 

Wed, 3/27, 12:30 pm, Women's Center Lower Lounge: Interactive event with Maria Ebrahimji, author of "I Speak for Myself: American Women on Being Muslim."

 

Maria Ebrahimji is a journalist and executive editorial producer for CNN. She  is also one of the editors of the I Speak for Myself series of books which includes one on Muslim women, one on Muslim men and one on youth involved with the Arab Spring revolutions.

Lunch will be served iA.

 

Thurs, 3/28, 7:30 pm, 2nd floor of Lilly Library: "Expressing Faith: Islam Inspired Art"

 

An art exhibit with calligraphy and paintings by Dr. Huda Totonji of Harvard University as well as glass sculptures by Christian Minister Andrew Kosorok who was inspired by the 99 Names of Allah will be on display until April 17 in Lilly Library. The exhibit will be complemented with alecture on Islamic art by Professor Carl Ernst from UNC.

Light refreshments will be served iA.

 

Fri, 3/29, 12:45 pm, Statue Quad:

Jummah on the Quad

 

Meet on the statue quad in front of the Chapel for Jummah prayer outside iA. The rain location is theYork Room in the Divinity School Gray Building.

 

Sun, 3/31, 6 pm, East Campus Coffee House:Spoken Word Night

 

The conclusion to IAW will be a night of entertainment featuring Grammy award nominated Ms. Latifah and other amazing local artists. If you would like to perform a rap, spoken word piece, or poetry, register HERE! Refreshments will be served iA.


 
MSA Fall Retreat PDF Print E-mail

Come to our fall retreat! Check out the following video, called The Retreaters: Muslims Assemble:  

The retreat will be held from Friday, Oct. 5th to Sunday, Oct. 7th. Register here by this upcoming Friday, Sept. 28th in order to make sure you will be able to go. Print out the liability form at the end and also make sure to hand a completed copy to an exec board member. We are listed here. The retreat will be held at a retreat home at Lake Gaston, and we have many fun spiritual activities planned.

Due to space limitations, MSA undergraduates will be given first priority; but everyone should apply and we will try to make arrangements so that everyone who wishes to come is able to.

Catholic Dinner PDF Print E-mail
Hey guys! On Tuesday, September 25th, we will be having dinner with the Catholic Students Association. Please come out, as they will be cooking for us and we would like to show them our appreciation! Cooking starts at 4:30 pm if you would like to help out. Dinner starts promptly at 6:30 pm. The event will take place at the Newman Center behind Epworth on East Campus. Hope to see many of you there!
 
MSA Open House PDF Print E-mail

Come out to our Open House this Friday, Aug. 31st! The event starts at 7pm at the Center for Muslim Life.

 

Finish off your first week of classes to our first Friday meeting of the year! We'll have some basic introductions, free (as well as scrumptious and zabiha) dinner catered by Mediterra, and games to start the year off on a strong foot. This will be a great opportunity to meet the new freshmen, as we welcome the incoming class of 2016! It is also everyone's chance to meet the executive board of MSA and present to us any suggestions/comments/concerns for this year.
